In order to draw near to God, it’s helpful to know what causes him to pull away. James 4:6 tells us that God is in opposition to pride. That means when we behave in a manner that is puffed up, arrogant, and haughty, God distances himself from us. It makes sense then that humility - the antonym of pride - draws God near.
To be humble is to be lowly in spirit, having a modest opinion of oneself. The Bible says that God gives grace to the humble. In other words, he favors the humble by showing them his goodwill and loving-kindness.
It is our choice to walk in either pride or humility! Through fasting, prayer, repentance, and worship, we can rid ourselves of the pride that would cause God to resist us.
James 4:8 says, “Come close to God, and God will come close to you.” Through the humbling of our soul, we can draw near to God. In return, God will draw near to us.
Will you draw near to God today?
